Why Class 3 Hi Visibility CERT Vest

Last year I registered to attend the 20 hour CERT training. I enjoyed the 3 day class. The final day simulated earthquake disaster exercise was eye opening. I realized how much the community where I live needs CERT volunteers.

They issued me a backpack which included a Class 2 green CERT vest. I understand when there is a disaster, whether its a bad earthquake or a devastating fire, the first people to arrive to help will probably be local CERT members. CERT stands for “Community Emergency Response Team”

When they arrive at a home, they need to be identified as a member of a team trained to assess the extent of damage, locate injured persons and provide first aid and determine whether the person needs immediate help or is not seriously hurt. The Green CERT vest issued to all CERT trained individuals must be worn to identify them as a trained CERT team member.

Many cities also use their CERT teams for Crowd Control and Traffic Control at public events and emergencies. Often Police and Fire personnel are overwhelmed and will call in the CERT teams to help keep pedestians and vehicles at a safe distance. A CERT team member will be directing traffic. They need to be Highly Visible. When directing traffic near moving vehicles, Federal Safety regulations require a person wear a Class 3 High Visibility vest. A Class 3 Vest has sleeves and additional reflective striping. The green Class 2 CERT vest that is issued to CERT trained members is not adequately visible to vehicle drivers, especially at night.

Here at Tom’s Protective Wear, we specialize in outfitting CERT teams in Class 3 High Visibility Vests. As you can see in the picture above, this person is properly attired and is highly visible to motorists.
